THE BROADSHEET
COLLECTION
FORMATTING - TYPOGRAPHY - PUBLICATION DESIGN - PRINTING
This is the outcome of a brief which required me to organise and present 150 JPEGs, alongside an extract from the book ”A Short History of Nearly Everything“ by Bill Bryson, into a broadsheet newspaper. Following the measurement and formatting requirements for the broadsheet, I was creatively challenged by the question of sorting the images into logical categories.
Mendeleev’s table efficiently displays the elements, grouping them by attributes such as atomic mass and chemical symbol. I used a similar approach for my broadsheet design solution, putting all visually relative images together. Nature. Plants. Animals.
Doing this, I found unexpected compatibility between these images and the periodic table. They both have a nature-based connection to Earth, and the text being about the universe enabled me to make visual/verbal relations throughout.
The finished broadsheet is filled with twists and turns, each category visually defined via colour codes and varying visual styles.
